Stoking residue from extraction of cassava starch without the use of storage technologies Ciência Rural
Javorski,Cleovani Rossi; Zambom,Maximiliane Alavarse; Pozza,Magali Soares dos Santos; Fernandes,Tatiane; Castagnara,Deise Dalazen; Paladini,Simoni; Tinini,Rodrigo Cesar dos Reis; Neres,Marcela Abbado.
The purpose of this paper was to study the storage of the residue from the extraction of cassava starch without the use of storage technologies, through chemical evaluation, pH values, temperature, development of microorganisms and mycotoxins. A randomized block design was used with eight treatments (different storage periods: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 days) and five replications. There was a significant difference for DM content, as a function of days in storage. The chemical composition of the residue from the extraction of cassava starch did not changed throughout the storage period. A negative linear effect was obtained for the pH values, which decreased with days in storage. There was significance of the storage period only for the fungus and...

The ant fauna of hospitals: advancements in public health and research priorities in Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Castro,Mariana Monteiro de; Prezoto,Helba Helena Santos; Fernandes,Elisa Furtado; Bueno,Odair Correa; Prezoto,Fábio.
Ants inhabit several types of natural and urban habitats, where they successfully nest. In urban environments, the hospitals should be considered priority for studies, as ants pose risks to human health due to their pathogen carrying potential. We aimed at surveying the literature about studies on ants in hospital settings in Brazil in the past 20 years. We found 40 papers in 22 journals, the first one published in 1993. Among them, 26 papers assessed pathogenic microorganisms on ants. We recorded 59 ant species, being Tapinoma melanocephalumthe most common. The Minas Gerais and São Paulo states had the largest number of published papers. Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul showed the highest number of species. Exotic ant species were recorded in all...

The importance of mastitis in dairy production in Brazil MV&Z
Costa, Elizabeth Oliveira da.
Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that causes severe economic losses due to reduced milk production, expence on pharmaceuticals, veterinary care, discarding of milk after treatment and discarding of affected animals. This inflammatory process may have distinct origins, but all cases of economic importance are caused by microorganisms. According to their origin and means of transmission, the main etiological agents were put together in two groups, contagious microorganisms (Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus sp, e Corynebacterium bovis) transmitted mainly during rnilking and environmental microorganisms (Streptococcus uberis, Enterobacteriaceae, fungos, algae of the genus Prototheca, etc.).Clinical mastitis is characterized by visible...

Thiocyanate degradation by pure and mixed cultures of microorganisms BJM
Souza-Fagundes,Elaine M.; Rosa,Luiz H.; Gomes,Newton C.M.; Santos,Mércia H.; Pimentel,Patricia F..
A mixed culture and a pure bacterial strain (BMV8) were isolated from a bioreactor for thiocyanate treatment. Both cultures removed 5 mM of thiocyanate from the medium in 36 hours. The mixed culture was able to tolerate concentrations up to 60 mM. The efficiency of thiocyanate degradation decreased when the cells were immobilized.

Trophic state and microorganisms community of major sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce basin, southeast Brazil BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Medeiros,Adriana Oliveira; Rosa,Carlos Augusto; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues.
Total phosphorus concentration was used to define the trophic state of the main sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce, in Minas Gerais State (southeast Brazil) and physical, chemical, and microbiological variables of water were analyzed during 2000 to 2001. The study evaluated changes in water quality caused by seasonality and human activities. Water temperature, conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, total-N, PO4-P, total-P, DOC, and chlorophyll-a were measured in seven rivers stretches (sampling stations). Total yeasts, faecal and total coliforms, and heterotrophic bacteria were also determined. The studied areas were considered to be under oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. The variables that...

Ultrasound efficiency in relation to sodium hypochlorite and filtration adsorption in microbial elimination in a water treatment plant BABT
Bello,Antonio Roberto Crystal; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi; Domingos,Roberto Naves.
Processes like ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were compared to eliminate microorganisms and to adjust established parameters of public drinking water. A mini water treatment plant (WTP-CB), in pilot scale, was projected and built to evaluate each process influence as: decontamination, coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. Total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and heterotrophic bacteria and physic/chemical parameters were quantified from water. Ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were efficient to inactivate and/or eliminate bacteria. Ultrasound decontamination in addition to coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration, could be considered as an alternative treatment water solution where...

Soudsada Saiyasaeng; Bundit Yuangsoi; Sutee Wongmaneeprateep.
Effects of Schizochytrium sp. on growth performance and survival rate of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles were studied. Fish (initial weight 2.27-2.30 g) were fed with commercial pellet feed (32% crude protein) supplemented with Schizochytrium sp. at 0 (control group), 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% for 8 weeks. The result showed that average weight gain of the 7.5, 5.0 and 2.5% Schizochytrium sp. supplemented were 37.84+1.227, 32.81+0.648 and 31.17+0.226 g, respectively, which were significantly different (P<0.05) from the control group (28.11+2.393 g). The Schizochytrium sp. supplemented fish had the average daily growth rate was significantly higher (P<0.05) than the control group but there was no statistically significant difference among...

The effects of dietary Schizochytrium sp. supplementation on growth and survival rate of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were studied. The prawns (approximate weight of 0.5 g/prawn) were fed with pelleted feed supplemented with Schizochytrium sp. at the levels of 0% (control group), 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0%. Fifteen prawns were used for each treatment with the experiments being carried out in triplicate. Initial weight of the prawns was measured at the beginning of the experiment and after culturing for 50 days in suitable conditions, final weight, weight gain and survival rate of the prawns were recorded. The results showed that survival rates of the prawns were not significantly different regardless of levels of Schizochytrium sp....
